I beleive both pop art and beat poetry are related to eachother, along with other forms of art and poetry. Both styles are taken from a genertation time period. Pop art uses many abstract designs and shapes, along with images depicting a certain movement or theme. From what i have seen of beat poetry so far, it seems a little different then normal styles of peotry. The styles are awkward, and the themes are sometimes unordinary. But you still get a strong message of what the writer was trying to get across. I find both styles to be very enjoyable to look at and read. I look forward to getting a deeper taste of both through this project.
Gosh I’m getting this done early this week but anyways, pop art and poetry… I think that the project that we are doing this week is really interesting, trying to relate a poem to pop art. The whole project is a little bit easier to do since the poems are from the same time period as pop art but overall making two totally different pieces of art correspond is difficult. I think that pictures speak louder than words because you are able to look deep into the colors and shapes that a picture has but on the other hand poems during pop art time I think describe the time back then a lot better. I think a lot of visual art during those times were forced and people we just beginning being comfortable with their sexuality that they wanted to express it in their art. I don’t know I guess I just like to paint my own picture and I don’t feel like the pictures during those times were painted well enough for me.
The pop art and beat poetry are so different from each other, that I think it's almost easier to relate them, if that makes sense. As I flipped through the pop art books, every picture seemed to be trying to tell a story, they were like a scene out of a movie, or a frame from a storyboard. Many of them seemed to have a life of their own. Just like the beat poetry, the awkward line breaks and pauses, give it an atypical beat, that when recited aloud, it sometimes sounds like a pulse or a heart beat, and so the poets are trying to portray something repressed, perhaps, that they need in life. Also, a lot of pictures had a lot of sexual tension, and seemed to portray some sort of sadness in this sexuality. The poems also had some hidden sexual suggestions that made me wonder if these coming of age poets and artists are trying to tell the next generations about something they're suppressing.
I think that both pop art and beat poetry were used to express dissatisfaction with the current state of the world. Their awkward lines and shapes reflect the awkwardness of the massive change that was gripping the world and their non-traditional styles portray the changing social climate and the warping of what was considered normal. Both forms of art attempt to connect with the individual, and force the individual to create his/her own meaning for the piece of art, which is just as correct as another persons interpretation. Both art forms are very individually oriented and speak to different people in different ways.
I have done projects very similar to this in the past and I like them because one can interpret a poem or painting in unique ways. What I like most is that everyone can look at the same picture or read the same poem but each person will see something different. Pop art and beat poetry were exceptionally interesting styles. They both seemed to challenge traditional principles of art and poetry. The pop art style usually uses many colors and does not look realistic. Beat poetry does not follow traditional rhyming schemes and seems to tell a story and hold deep meaning for the author and reader. It is also interesting how some pictures can fit so well with certain poems to create an even more vivid image or give a completely new interpretation of the two works. It is intriguing that this can be done even though the author or painter did not intend for them to relate.
What I found most interesting in Beat Poetry was not the style, but the content of the poem. For the 1960's, matters such as sex, drugs and alcohol were seen as taboo. Also, most authors write their poetry with quick wit and exaggerated words. Additionally, in Pop Art the shapes and colors are large and vibrant. To me, this represents the changes (to an exaggerated degree) that were occurring in American society and politics at the time.
Pop art and beat poetry are very different from one another. Pop Art often uses bright colors to convey images that catch a persons attention while beat poetry describes one's views on the current situation. However, they are also slightly similar because beat poets often wrote about cultural ideas and phenomena that were often shown visually through pop art. Both of these things portray ideas through loud and often very opinionated views. I personally like pop art because each picture is extremely different from the next but almost all incorporate stunning colors into their piece.
I can see the strong correlation between pop art and beat poetry. I understand that they were both produced in about the same era, the a950's and 1960's. and they both portray the same artistic qualities. I feel that beat poetry and pop art were created and published to show the liberal side of America. Both the pictures and the poetry portray the hard and sometimes obscene situations that people went through during this era. Personally, I am not a fan for either the art pieces or the poetry because I am not a fan of the weird subjects or primary colors.
Beat Poetry and Pop Art have both been used as a means of exercising freedom of expression. In Beat Poetry, the topics, such as drug use and sexuality, and particular obscene word choice were seen as challenging what was looked upon as acceptable for the 1950's. Both forms of art are non-conformist and represent the harsh reality. Beat Poetry is geared more towards trying to reach a deeper sense of spirituality while Pop Art is an artistic display of modern topics/issues.
Personally I like the style of beat poetry. However the pop culture arts doesn't do anything for m e. it all seems the same to me. But the poetry I can notice a difference and I like the beat to them.I also like the fact that they are right to the point they don't neccesarily use big describing words that i have no idea what they mean. this is why i like beat poetry more than normal poetry.
I think that beat poetry is a very interesting form of poetry. It seems like to me, authors just write down any random thoughts that they have on any kind of subject and call it poetry. The topics of beat poetry range a lot but I find most of them very interesting because they're about something I would never think to write about. Beat poetry is very abstract. Pop art on the other hand is very abstract as well. I think pop art relates to beat poetry because it has the same kind of abstractness and randomness. I like looking at pop art and trying to figure out what the artists were trying to illustrate.
I personally don't much care for "pop art," I'm much more of a fan of traditional art, drawing things as they are with the issue being expressed using paint texture, if any issue is being expressed at all. I don't like it when I have to look at "art" and actually wonder if it is at all art. Ads for random products reproduced in a rainbow of colors doesn't seem much like art to me, it's not interesting, and it bores me. But then someone will come along and tell you hat the purpose of the "art" was to bore you and they win anyways, too confusing.
Well Beat Poetry Modernized poetry and stood as a symbol to represent those who were against slavery, and the corruption of government. They stood against war with peaceful protesting. Its almost like Beat Poetry stands as a power which supports in the time of need. While Pop Art serves the future generations so we can look back and see the different kinds of expression for that time.
I think that beat poetry is interesting, but from the imitating standpoint it is hard to copy a poem that seems to make little sense. I like pop art becuase it is cool that they take everyday items (like Warhol's soup cans) and turn it into art. It is fun to look through the books at the different poems and at the art. I think the writing my own beat peom will be the hardest step in this project.
I hate beat poetry. It is my least favorite kind mostly because it really has no specific form that defines it genre. I don't like how beat poets especially Allen Ginsberg have a thought and just cut to the next line to complete it. It's really annoying and makes the style hard to imitate. As for pop art I think it is a reflection of the time and the laziness of the people. Pop art is taking the same picture, sometimes even a photograph, and redrawing it a thousand times or some thing that somebody else made and putting it on canvas. There is little interpretation and little actual work that goes into it. It does not have any of the style that the Impressionists or the Renaissance painters exhibited. Pop art fits perfectly with beat poetry since they both suck.
I think and feel the beat poetry is very unique. It is defiantly not my first choice of a way to describe my feeling. However, I like how random it is. Talking about so many different subjects
Now with Pop Art I think that it is Very bright. I love all of the colors, there are so many of them. I also feel that the art sometimes may not grasp the artist's original intent.
i really don't have much to say about Pop art and Beat Poetry. i think they are both pretty outstanding displays of art. Pop art is just really unique and interesting, and i like how it can be real, but at the same time completely imaginative. Beat Poetry, for me, is like any other kind of poetry, but probably just different because the concept is based on other aspects.
I enjoy the project that we are working on now, relating a beat poem to a piece of pop art. It is very interesting becuase both the beat poems and pop art are very unique and everyone can see them in a different way. The pop art is so unique from any other type of art becuase of the way that it is made. There are so many wonderful bright colors and designs. Beat poetry is different as well; some of the poems you would not even consider poems in different cases. I am excited to see what everyone in class comes up with as far as their pictures and re-written poems.
Pop art is very similar to beat poetry in that both forms of art defy conventional standards. Beat poetry is a free-form, improvisational style of writing that conveys the spontaneous way of life during the beat generation. Pop art depicted many different subject matters that were previously not considered suitable for fine art. Pop artists transformed familiar objects into art. I am not a big fan of beat poetry because it lacks structure, although the subjects of beat poetry are still interesting. I really like pop art because it is interesting to see everyday objects transformed into art.
Pop art seems to be very abstract and varies from different artists' ideas. As I was choosing my beat poem, I had some trouble. I felt that the topics the poets wrote about didn't interest me, and they were extremely sexual in some of the books, which made it difficult to find a pop art piece to match. Although sometimes repetitive, the beat poems painted vivid images in my mind. I enjoy reading these poems and looking at pop art much more than reading plays, because its easier to comprehend and you can interpret the ideas any way you decide.
When I was looking for a poem from the Beat Generation one of the most common results came from Jack Kerouac. He is known as the father of the Beat Generation and popular culture. Along with him are William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. He was influence by the huge outbreak of Jazz and his style is known as Spontaneous Prose. After reading this article about Kerouac. It was much easier to find a good Beat Poem and pop art for my assignment. The styles are classic and sometimes hard to interpret directly from the text. They take a lot of in-depth thinking.
I am enjoying the project we are doing in class right now relating beat poetry to pop art. I happen to like beat poetry myself and find it easier to be able to write this kind of poem. Pop art is alright, it doesnt seem to interest me that much. We did alot of this type of work in creative writing and I always seemed to be able to think of various poems to write. I noticed that the poems i wrote for that class were mostly all in the form of beat poetry.
Pop art has always been an interest of mine. I find it much more stimulating and enjoying to look at. Also pop art comes from a generation closer to mine and many of the things it is based on I know and have an idea about as apposed to classic paintings of the early 16th century through the 19th century. Pop art and beat poetry seem to go hand in hand with each other. They both are taking place around the same time period around the 60s and many things that beat poetry is written around you can find a piece of pop art that relates to the style or theme of the beat poem. I am really enjoying the assignment we are doing right now because it is very different from the typical read a book write an essay scheme. I found a poem and pretty easily reltate it to the pop art i found after doing a little interpretation and looking into the picture to relate it to my poem.
I think that the poetry was very unique and different. The poets all had different styles and it was interesting to see the things that they were interested or were important to them show up in their poetry. I thought beat poetry would just be all about one thing and all in one style but it was nice to see all the different styles. Personally I think pop art is kind or boring and repetitive. I found it rather boring and didn't really find it at all interesting.
Obviously pop art and beat poetry are related to each other because they are both forms of art. However I think that art unless directly illustrating a specific object of the poetry does not usually illustrate the poetry. Usually patterns illustrate poetry better than an object. This project is really related to each other though because pop art and beat poetry occurred in th same time era.
I find both pop art and beat poetry to be a reflection of society in that time. What I enjoy most about this project is the freedom we have with choosing a poem and a picture that matches it well. I feel that both the poetry and the art are related because they both portray new and abstract ideas/pictures. On the other hand, one thing I dislike about beat poetry is that although it is abstract and unique, often times it's difficult to interperet. It took me a while to find a poem that I understood thoroughly and enjoyed.
I think that both Pop Art and Beat poetry were used to defy the norms of "traditional" art. It seems that both seem to have no general pattern or rule to them, but they express emotion or a story in a very interesting and artistic way. It also seems that both came about during a time period that the young population was rebelling against society. I think the assignment itself is somewhat difficult though, it is hard to make "beat poetry" flow together and create the image that you are hoping for!
I think beat poetry is very interesting. It seems to express many ideas of the times at which these poems were written. however, I don't understand the actual characteristics of Beat poems. They seem to be as diverse and open-ended in terms of theme as well as writing style, so it makes it difficult to discern the actual characteristics of a "beat poem"
The same goes for pop art. They can have very genuine ideas inside them, however i don't understand what separates them from most other forms of visual art.
I have close to no repect for beat poetry. It seems to me that it is just a bunch of words tossed together to somewhat resemble random thoughts the author has about a subject (which usually involves vulgar sex stories). However pop art can be fun, and it does take some creative person to come up with original ideas.
I have enjoyed looking at pop art because most of the art has lots going on and are full of color. I chose a piece of art by David Hockney because I liked the style of his painting. I have also looked at his art before. I enjoyed searching through beat poetry too. At first I didn't know how to tell the difference but after reading a few I recognized the way they flowed. Matching the poem and art together was actually pretty easy for me and I think it will be fun to try to imitate both.
One thing I love about beat poetry is that the poems are not made up of complicated metaphors and large, sophisticated words. You can read a lot of these poems like you would a regular story because they are not written in the style of the poems we read in class on Friday. I view beat poetry as "real" because the words flow the way a person speaks and their opinions are not hidden.
While viewing pop art in class, I realized that I either really like a piece or really dislike it. One of the coolest pieces I came across was a still life by Hockney. He took pictures of a guitar, a bottle of wine and a newspaper from many different angles and then put them together so that they almost made one completed, lined-up picture.
I believe that this project is going to turn out for the best. Beat poetry is rather exciting because it's based off of these artists personal experiences and what was going on in the world that they were living in. As far as pop art it's a visual display of their emotions and life events. Both of these forms are so different from what we see these days. The artists were able to say and draw whatever they felt even if it had no meaning. It was a way of expressing themselves without having to worry about what others thought.
As far as beat poems go, I have found a couple good ones but the majority of them seem to be so abstract that its tough to even know what they're talking about. There doesn't seem to be a specific structure to them like some other forms of poetry (ie haikus) I guess this is art, however confusing it may be. Pop art, on the other hand, seems to be very vibrant and eye catching. My favorite pop art thus far is the ones that look sort of cartoons, and I ended up choosing one of these by Lichtenstein.
This project has offered a chance to take a look at a new type of art. I really enjoy pop art, especially the works done by Roy Lichtenstein, his are my favorite. I just love the way that they make the art tell as story, its really amazine. I also find that i enjoy beat poetry more than any other type of poetry that i have ever read. While i was looking through books i found so many poems that interested me. It seems that beat poetry is fun and funny and something that you can play around with, i just felt that a lot of the poems were really true, and they had a unique way of portraying these aspects of life that so many people experience.
Pop art and beat poetry are from around the same time period and stand for cutting edge new forms of art. My favorite pop artist is David Hockney. His bold and bright paintings are drastically different than paintings before his. His simplistic master pieces are very appealing and portray happiness. Beat poetry is a form of poetry that symboizes changes in American history.
I think that beat poetry is okay. I dont really like poetry and beat poetry seems to be about the same a s all poetry. It is a little easier to understand for the most part. I think that when people write all kinds of poetry it is to describe a feeling but beat poetry seems to have a feeling about something that they do not like, usually about the time period or an issue going on at that time. Pop art is interesting. It makes you think about what was being thought when the person painted it and what they were trying to say.
Beat poetry was definatly a new thing for me. The one that i had chosen first had double meaing so i brought it to Mr.S and he said the the majority of it did so that made me a little scared to read more. The pop art though i love it. My favorite artist of all time happens to be Andy Worhal I think all of his work is just amazing. Its stuff you dont see everyday and not everyone can create it. I really enjoyed this project except for the part where I had to come up with my own beat poem that was a challange
For this project it was hard to find a picture that fit perfectly with my poem. I had to read mine over several times to understand it better. Everyone can interpret the unique styles of the pop art style and I think it how you look at the that gives it its meaning. As for beat poetry it is still hard to completely understand and notice all the little things that make up the poem.
I find pop art to be really strange. A lot of it doesn't really seem like most people would call art, Andy Warhol's cambell's soup cans for example. I was also surprised to find that Disney animations are considered pop art. All in all pop art is pretty strange but i was able to find a picture that matches my beat poem. Beat poetry is a little bit harder to distinguish from other poetry because poems of all times have written poems about certain ideas. In reading Gary Snyder's poem books i was able to distinguish some ideas that seemed prevalent in his poems.
I think that most poetry today in many parts of the country is outdated. It is rarely taught in school anymore, and if it is it is only a short lesson or course. I think that there are obviously several reasons why this is so, including government budget cuts and requirements for certain subjects that teachers must teach students (and poetry isn't as important to them as the WASL :) Anyways, I think that beat poetry is stuck in the years where it originated. Similar to hippies, you don't see too many people now a days who are extremely involved in beat poetry. In the 1960's the issues beat poetry concerned were much more controversial than they are today. This could possibly be the reason why beat poetry might not be so popular: maybe there is no media coverage on the issues it regards anymore. However there are millions of different types of people in the world and I think that out there among them there are and always will be people who are interested in poetry, including the beat style. I also think that it will be easy to fit poems and pop art together, because unlike poems, I believe that art is viewed a different way by everybody.
I think Pop art and beat poetry are related because they both appeal more to the general public, not the upety people in this world. I think this is because pop art and beat poetry relate to things that are found in ordinary life and are easy to interpret and understand. Although many critics may be against it, this is part of their similarities. Both pop art and beat poetry came out about the same time which contributes to their similarites. Because of their time frame, they portrayed the same issues of that time, just in different forms: art and poetry. I think that creators of both forms might have been on the same kind of drugs as well.
The most interesting thing about pop art is that the authors who paint, draw and or sculpt an image/s, freely represent their pieces of art through the reality of the world. It seems that those arts have more to say about its surroundings than what art really is; I say this because, when I looked at some of the arts, they do not look like anything but what the reality is like. Also, it seems that most of the pop arts are of images of sexuality representations. As for poetry, I really enjoy reading some of them, because I have always love reading poetries and writing some. A lot and like most of the poems, they do not rythm, but each holds such meanings that can be interprated into many different ways.
I have really enjoyed learning more about beat poetry and pop art. I felt as though I knew a bit mroe about pop art and a few of the famous artists and their pieces. However, I didn't know anything at all about Beat Poetry before looking through the books during class. I really enjoy how the author speaks almost conversationally towards the reader. The casual tone of the poems, and the fact that there is no rhyme scheme or format is appealing to me. The subjects of the poems can sometimes be hard to decipher, depending on the writer, but it's interesting to see how each person interprets the poem. An interesting aspect to the poetry and art is thinking about the corresponding history during the origins of both pop art and beat poetry. Both were in respons to the drastic changing of social norms. I look foward to getting deeper into both the art and the poetry as I create my own.
Pop art and beat poetry are very interesting. I love the way poets express their feelings through a rhythm of words. I also love pop art and the brightness, designs, shapes and more conveyed through the picture. Pop art is my favorite type of art, especially the works of Andy Warhols and Roy Lichtenstein.
I have yet to find any pop art that "strikes my interest." The repetitive art be Andy Warhol is interesting, but boring and, well, repetitive. And sometimes the artwork will just be a couple of papers glued to some other papers. I can do that. That's not art, that's first grade. So mine is the stereotypical teenage view of pop art: why bother, it's all the same and terribly boring. Now while pop art itself is boring this project is not bad. Finding a poem that we can connect to some piece of pop art makes us really try to interpret both the poem and the art work.
I find beat poetry and pop art very interesting. I cannot decide if I like Pop Art or not. I enjoy Andy Warhol's pieces but some of the artists paintings are "interesting," might we say. I find the history behind pop art Intriguing and its impact on commercial, graphic, and fashion design. It embraced the environment of everyday life, closing the gap between life and art. In my opinion Beat Poetry and Pop art can be perceived as very similar, or very different. In my opinion they complement each other. They originate from close time periods but pop art came a little later. They both were also influenced by economy and the life of that time. I really enjoy beat poetry and think it is a accurate reflection of the time period.

~~Mea Pen~~
